First time?

what to expect:

We understand that it can be a bit daunting walking into a combat gym for the first time! So here’s a few answers to some common concerns and FAQs:

  • A typical hour long session involves: a proper warmup >> learning a technique or combination to practice with a partner, either with pads, on the bag or doing drills with protective gear >> fitness conditioning
  • Our coaches will be walking around and giving individual advice and help during the session
  • You don’t need your own protective equipment for your first session, we can provide boxing gloves and shin pads* – obviously if you stick with it then you’ll want to purchase your own!
  • We do not provide boxing hand-wraps – although you don’t need them for your first session, you will eventually want to get a pair to protect your wrists when punching.
  • “But I’m not flexible!” Flexibility is something that develops with strength and time, and we never push people beyond their limits. You won’t be doing anything crazy in your first class, and if a move is too technical our coaches will know where you get you started.
  • “But I’m not fit!” Same as above!! Fitness comes with time and practice. You might find your first session physically challenging but every time you show up you’ll find it easier.
  • “I’m worried about being hit” Don’t worry – we do not allow any of our beginners to do any sparring (fighting with protective equipment) until the coaches feel you have reached a level of confidence and ability to do light sparring. Even then, it’s only if you feel comfortable doing so.
